This year, GO’s Teacher Policy Fellows have centered their policy focus on teacher retention. In exploring this topic, we are using The Project on the Next Generation of Teacher’s article, “Who Stays in Teaching and Why?: A Review of the Literature on Teacher Retention.” The “Who Stays” Series will be blog posts by Teacher Policy Fellows which highlight specific quotes from the article, explore their own experience in the classroom, and use research and perspective to expand on that particular topic.

This influential, 100+ page article has been a staple of the Fellowship and provides a wide view on the issues impacting teacher retention, from the table of contents:

  • Preparation
  • Hiring
  • Compensation
  • Working Conditions
    • Facilities, Equipment, Supplies
    • Teaching Assignments
    • Curriculum, Standards, and Accountability
  • School Community
    • Colleagues and School Leaders
    • Students
  • Career
